26/05/09 - Recycling Hits 40%

Shoebury residents have helped the borough's recycling rate rise from 34% to 40%. This rising rates show that Shoebury residents are recycling nearly half of their hosehold waste - diverting more than 30,000 tonnes from landfill sites.

The recent increase is thanks to Shoebury residents making the most of the latest recycling developemnts  which include:

  • A new food waste collection which started in October 2008
  • The collection of glass bottles and jars in pink recycling bags
  • The collection and recycling of small electrical items and cooking oil at Waste recycling centres

Cllr Pat raynes commented:

"I would like to thank all the residents of Shoebury for their fantastic efforts in helping to achieve the 40% figure.

Please help us to increase the amount further so we can achieve the magical 50% mark next year.''
