20/01/10 - Essex Police launch beat the burgler

The police are experiencing very high burglary levels across the whole county and are therefore trying to encourage householders to put in place some simple measures to prevent them becoming victims of this crime.

We have added their Beat the Burgler advice leaflet to our website

The key messages are:

· Most burglaries that happen in this area can be prevented by correctly securing the property

· Always lock UPVC doors properly (see attached leaflet for diagram)

· For all other doors and windows, fit secure locks and take extra care when locking up

· Make your property look occupied at all times

· Consider installing an alarm – homes with alarms rarely get burgled

· When leaving the property remove keys from locks and place out of sight

Burglars break into properties to steal car keys – so in addition consider the following:

·  Avoid leaving car keys near a door or window where they can be seen

·  Lock your car in a garage or behind a locked gate if possible

·  Consider purchasing a tracker device for your vehicle
